Tips for flying with your bike

Mountainbiking Travel TipsBefore you start dismantling your pride and joy into pieces, you can hire a bike of similar standard to your own at your destination.

By hiring a bike you save yourself some time disassembling and re-assembling your bike, money as you don't need to check it onto the flight, wear 'n' tear and best of all avoid the possibility of loosing your bike in transit.

We've all heard the nightmare stories where the bike ends up in China, when it should have been going to Spain! When it does find its way to the right airport, its a week late and your holiday is over...

It will pay off to have a look at the pointers below before you go...

  1. You will need to purchase or borrow a well padded and secure bike bag or box, which needs to be able to fit into a car with yourself at your destination.
  2. Start by detaching your wheels, deflate both tyres and take off your quick releases.
  3. Detach your pedals, rear mech.
  4. Drop your saddle down as low as possible or take your seatpost and saddle out of your seat tube altogether.
  5. Turn your handle bars to be inline with your bike frame.
  6. Secure all parts with soft padding to protect from scratches.
  7. Finally make sure your bike box or bag is well labelled with your full contact details clearly displayed.
  8. Ensure you get to the airport in good time and enjoy your flight.

If you want to hire a bike just mention it when booking.
